We talked about how black families at this time were treated different than the white families. I felt bad for Kenny when I heard this because he gets picked on enough at school. Their mom seems a lot more strict than my mom has ever been. I was nervous for Byron when I read that his mom would burn him if she caught him again with matches. I know she was worried he would start fires, but this seemed harsh. I was scared when she caught him and I didn't know what was going to happen next. I wanted their dad to get home to stop it. Their dad seems to handle situations in a much different way. I didn't think that he would burn Byron like his mother. I really liked the way their dad handled the part in chapter 7 when Byron. He also used sense of humor when dealing with his hair. I didn't feel as nervous when reading this chapter as I did when reading chapter 5. I really like their dad because he reminded me of mine!

Chapters 3 and 4

The more I read of The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963, I get attached to some of the characters. Kenny seems like such a sweet young boy. I really feel bad for the way he is treated at school. His brother Byron seems to keep an eye on him and I know he realizes this, but I still wish people didn't have to be so mean. I am glad that Kenny met Rufus. They seem like they may have a lot in common. He doesn't seem like the other mean kids at school. I found the beginning of chapter 4 funny. I could relate to this feeling because my mom always would dress me very warm so I didn't catch a cold. I think Kenny's mom took it a step further, but I know what it feels like to have so many layers of clothes and it gets to the point where you don't think you can move! It is clear for me to see the difference in personality between Kenny and Byron. They both seem like nice kids, but Byron stands up for himself and Kenny. Kenny would rather walk away from a bad situation then get caught in it. I am just like Kenny. While I am reading I feel like I can relate to Kenny the most.

Chapters 1 and 2

After reading the first two chapters of The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963, I am looking forward to what is going to happen next. I already feel connected to the family. They seem like they really like to have fun with one another. While I was reading, I was thinking about my family and how we would interact in a story like this. I could relate to the cold weather they were facing because living in Maine my whole life has really shown me how cold it can get! Byron already reminds me of someone I grew up with. He tends to get himself into trouble. One thing I didn't like was the fact that Kenny gets picked on. I think it is a good thing for him to have a brother like Byron, but I hope Bryon is able to watch out for him throughout the book so Kenny's feelings don't get hurt. I look forward to read further on to see what happens!
